The TAS 1000 True Air Data Computer System provides the pilot with a wealth of useful information all based on real time measurements of airspeed, altitude, temperature, fuel flow, heading, ground speed and track. Designed to interface with many brands of GPS, it unlocks many previously hidden data pages in most GPS navigators. In addition to its in flight advisory function, it can also serve as a backup altimeter, airspeed indicator or fuel flow meter.

The TAS 1000 is designed for use in any piston, turboprop, or jet aircraft and provides a full compliment of features when interfaced to a slaved compass system or HSI, fuel transducers, and compatible GPS system. It will deliver a useful subset of features even if all the interfaces are not available.

Detailed Function List - Functions.pdf 27 KB

The TAS 1000 will display a huge assortment of data in both English and Metric units. The user may select any combination of features and easily tailor the instrument's character to satisfy their own needs.

The system options include an Altitude Encoder / Overspeed Indicator system that presents altitude information (pressure and/or barometric corrected altitude) and overspeed warning information to the pilot. It does so by receiving altitude and overspeed warning information from the TAS 1000 Air Data Computer System.

TAS 1000 Size: Width 3.550 / Height 1.400 / Length 4.475

Windicator Size: Diameter 1.406 / Depth 0.297

How the TAS 1000 True Air Data Computer System works.

After Initial Data entry is completed, TAS will automatically begin to calculate all air data functions.

TAS 1000 will also display a wind direction arrow on the moving map page of your GPS unit.

Air data may be viewed in three ways; on the Windicator, directly on the TAS display, and on the AIR DATA page(s) of the connected GPS.

TAS 1000 Aircraft System Interface.

The TAS 1000 gets its inputs from several sources within the airplane. A useful subset of functionality is available if some of the interfaces are not available. The following is a list of interfaces and the functions they affect.

Altimeter Baro output - Some high end altimeters provide an out signal to report the barometer setting as entered in the altimeter. This commonly used for autopilots, and altitude preselectors. The TAS 1000 is easily configured to accommodate most altimeters of this type. When this feature is available the TAS baro input will automatically track the baro setting on the altimeter. The baro information will also be conveyed to some GPS's as well.

Static system - The static input is measured as a pressure. It provides the fundamental data used to calculate altitude, airspeed, vertical speed and gradient.

Pitot system - The pitot input is measured to determine the ram air pressure on the pitot tube. This is the fundamental ingredient of the airspeed related functions.

OAT temperature - This an electrical connection to the outside air temperature probe. All of the temperature related parameters (SAT, TOT,ISA) and the density related parameters (DA,DAD,TAS,MACH) depend on OAT measurements.

GPS serial data - The GPS interface is bi-directional. The TAS 1000 receives navigation track and ground speed from the GPS to calculate winds aloft. The TAS 1000 also transmits the parameters it calculates like altitude, air speed, heading, wind direction and speed, total air temperature, static air temperature as well as fuel flow information and measurement units back to the GPS for display. Most GPS' offer new pages of information when provided with this Interface.

Fuel flow transducers - These signals provide the TAS with the primary information needed to calculate all of the fuel related functions.

HSI compass system - Two formats of compass heading information are supported. The most desirable compass interface is the 400Hz AC synchro as it conveys the compass heading directly without user intervention. The second choice is the stepper interface available in the KCS-55 compass system. This requires the user to set the heading manually, and correct it if it changes. Once set adjustments are rare. If no compass interface is available then the user may set the heading manually.

VIEWING THE WINDICATOR

The Windicator will continuously display actual wind aloft data for the aircraft's current altitude in real time.

Wind direction relative to the aircraft's heading, head/tail wind component, and wind drift angle are displayed graphically.

  • Wind Direction - Displays wind direction relative to the aircraft heading shown by a single lit pointer on the outer ring.
  • Wind Speed in knots - Wind speed is displayed clockwise from the six o'clock position on the inner circle bar graph. Each LED = 2 knots.
  • Head or Tail wind in knot - .Head or tail wind is displayed by a single blinking LED on the same inner circle bar graph as the Wind Speed.
  • Drift Angle in Degrees - The drift angle is displayed on the inner bar graph. Each LED = 5 degrees.
